Prioritizing Your Self-Care to Better Your Life
Are you struggling to prioritize your self-care? Do you find yourself too busy to take care of yourself?
It’s a common misconception that self-care involves slapping on face masks and taking a long bath while sipping wine.
In reality, prioritizing your self-care involves more than a beauty routine.
True self-care is about taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional health to become the best version of yourself.
In this blog post, I share eight practical self-care tips to help you prioritize your needs while empowering your life. So if you’re ready to take control of your health and happiness and lead a balanced life, keep reading.

Why You Should Prioritize Self-Care
For most of us, taking care of ourselves often falls to the bottom of our to-do list.
Of course we’re busy juggling work and family duties, so we often put our needs on the back burner.
However, making self-care a top priority is incredibly important to our physical and mental well-being.
Have you heard the phrase, you can’t pour from an empty cup? The same rings true for self-care—you need to prioritize yourself.
And I know this advice may sound selfish, but it isn’t. Trying to do everything for everyone else before you take care of yourself can be draining and lead to burnout.
Self-care is beneficial because it helps us to take charge of our lives, manage stress, and improve our overall well-being.
We can then manage our loved one’s needs without sacrificing ourselves.
It’s a win-win.
How to Make Self-Care a Priority
1. Build a Self-Care Plan
As you attempt to keep up with your life demands, focusing on self-care is sometimes the last thing on your mind. Therefore, creating a plan will help you stay on top of your self-care needs.
The first step in building your self-care plan is to think of activities that help you relax and restore energy.
Once you have a list of activities, decide when you’ll work on them and add them to your schedule.
Your self-care plan or schedule doesn’t have to be rigid. It can be as simple as taking a few minutes to clear your head. For example, you can schedule 10 minutes to journal or bible study or make a plan to meditate or drink more water.
Self-care plans look different for everyone, but the key is to make them a part of your daily routine.
2. Create a Daily Self-Care Routine
Although creating a daily self-care routine may seem daunting, it’s worth the effort.
Besides, a routine will help you keep up with your self-care goals.
Remember, your daily self-care routine doesn’t need to be complicated. The important thing is to commit to doing something each day that makes you relax, de-stress, and feel good overall.
For example, your daily self-care routine can be as simple as going on a nature walk, enjoying your morning coffee, completing your skincare steps, or watching your favorite TV show.
I love to create a morning routine and evening routine, which means I start and end my day with self-care.
3. Develop a Good Work-Life Balance
Did you know that over 65% of Americans a lack work-life balance?
A work-life balance may seem impossible, especially if you’re working on a big project with a tight deadline.
However, working long hours can lead to stress and burnout and make it harder to prioritize your self-care.
In fact, I used to work through my lunch break, but it only led to a decline in my productivity and mental health.
Your mind and body operate better when you give them a break.
Setting boundaries in the office and home is an excellent way to create a healthy work-life balance.
For example, taking regular breaks, setting a cut-off time for work, learning to say no, and scheduling family time can help you stay on top of your responsibilities and self-care priorities.
4. Eat a Balanced Diet
Have you ever been so engrossed in your work you forgot to eat?
It happens to the best of us.
But it’s important to remember that having a healthy relationship with food is also part of prioritizing your self-care routine.
Poor nutrition comes in many forms, like skipping meals, eating too little protein or fruits and veggies, or overeating processed foods.
As painless as it may seem, winging your meals can lead to poor eating habits and other health risks like fatigue, difficulty focusing, and weight gain.
To ensure you’re eating well, create a meal plan that includes nutrient-dense meals and healthy snacks. Add plenty of fruits and vegetables, healthy proteins, and whole grains to your meals.
I don’t know about you, but I get bored eating the same foods every day. If you’re like me, explore different recipes to keep your meal plans fresh and sustainable.
5. Get a Good Night’s Rest
Getting enough sleep is one of the most important aspects of self-care. Adults need at least 7 hours of sleep each night to give their bodies enough time to rest and recover.
For many of us, getting consistent sleep can be difficult. However, when you don’t get enough sleep, it’s much harder to think clearly, focus on tasks, or make sound decisions.
To get a good night’s rest, create a bedtime routine. By setting a routine, your body’s internal clock will know when it’s time to go to bed, and you’ll be able to fall asleep much faster.
Taking a warm bath, drinking herbal tea, or reading your favorite book can help you unwind before bed.
And remember to turn off all devices at least an hour before bed to avoid the melatonin-disrupting blue light emitted from your screens.
6. Improve Your Physical Health
Your physical health should always be at the top of your list. Taking care of your body and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for long-term health.
When life gets crazy, it’s easy to put physical activity on the “one-day” list.
However, regular exercise not only helps keep your body healthy, but it also releases endorphins that give you energy and make you feel good.
If you’re unsure where to start, begin with simple activities like a daily walk, yoga class, or stretch session.
One thing that has helped me keep up with my physical well-being is noting the activity I’ll complete that day. Even if I’m having a busy day, 15 minutes of movement makes a tremendous difference.
And don’t forget that exercising outdoors has added benefits like fresh air, Vitamin D, and a change of scenery.
7. Prioritize Your Mental Well-Being
For your self-care, your mental well-being is just as important as your physical health.
It’s easy to forget about our mental health in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Then add social media and technology, and suddenly we’re overwhelmed with information overload.
According to a Pew Research Center study, about 5% of Americans used social media in 2005. However, as of 2016, almost 70% of Americans are using social media.
As you can guess, we spend more time on our devices with little thought about how it affects our mental health.
Taking a break from the digital world to enjoy other activities, like walking outdoors or journaling, can help your mental well-being.
When I need a pick-me-up, I usually find a quiet place to relax, puzzle, or journal for 10 minutes.
How you prioritize your mental health might differ from someone else. It’s crucial to recognize what works best for you and commit to doing those things.
8. Make Your Emotional Health a Priority
Many things can affect our emotions, from work demands and toxic relationships to health issues and financial woes.
However, prioritizing your emotional well-being can help you get in the right frame of mind.
When I’m on an emotional rollercoaster, I pause what I’m doing to be in the present moment, which helps me talk myself off the ledge and put things into perspective.
Regardless, the goal is to catch your emotions before it hits rock bottom.
And one of the best ways to keep your emotions in check is to do activities that can help you reduce stress and cultivate happiness regularly.
For example, journaling for 10 minutes every morning, scheduling a weekly therapist session, spending time with family members, or planning a monthly brunch date with close friends are great ways to nurture your emotional health.
