Evening Routine for the Fall Season

Are you looking for a fall evening routine to keep you productive and give you Autumn vibes?

Well… look no further!

While the autumn visuals are delightful (love those fall-themed YouTube videos), you also need a routine to help you manage your everyday tasks.

So, how do you create a routine that gives you all the cozy feels and helps you stay on top of things?

Activity pairing or habit pairing (we’ll discuss more later).

Pairing your activities, whether it’s reading, lighting a candle, preparing a meal, or planning for the next day, is the secret to a successful fall evening routine.

In this blog post, I will share relaxing and productive ideas to do in the evenings and how to construct them into a realistic fall evening routine.

Alright, let’s get started.

Relaxing Fall Evening Routine Ideas

Do we agree that fall is the unofficial cozy season?

That means we’re going for all the feel-good vibes. These activities will help you unwind, have fun, and embrace the coziness of the season.

Enjoy a Warm Bath

There’s nothing like a warm bath or shower after a long day.

Add bath salts, essential oils, candles, or relaxing music for a spa-like experience.

I love Native body wash, especially the fall-scented ones—Sandalwood and Shea Butter, Warm Cider and Cinnamon, and Coastal Oak and Amber are my faves.

And don’t skip out on the rest of your skincare. The fall air is a bit drier, so a revamped hair and skincare routine (hydrating cleansers, nourishing masks, heavier moisturizers) may be in order.

Read a Good Book

You can’t have a fall evening routine without a good read. Set aside time each evening to get cozy under a warm blanket and read your favorite book.

Create a To Be Read (TBR ) list for the fall season, and fill it with fall-themed books, like mystery, fantasy, or any books that exude fall vibes.

You can also participate in a fall reading challenge where you set a reading goal and try to read as many books on your list during the season.

Listen to Calming Music

One of my favorite ways to spend my fall evenings is to listen to music.

It’s a great way to relax and unwind.

Create a playlist of your favorite calming songs and listen to them as you wind down in the evening.

Although you can choose whatever music you like, you can’t go wrong with a few fall tunes. If you need ideas, you can find plenty of playlists on YouTube.

Watch Your Favorite TV Show

Nothing is better than cozying up and watching your favorite TV show or movie. Is it a cold, rainy evening? Even better!

You can go hardcore and tune into a horror or thriller flick or choose something more light-hearted, like a rom-com or fantasy. And don’t forget the shows that give off the autumn vibes… Gilmore Girls.

Here are a few of my favorite TV shows and movies to watch in the fall:

(Most are not fall-themed, but they give me all the cozy vibes).

  • Vampire Diaries
  • The Golden Girls
  • Little House on the Prairie
  • Anne with an E
  • Law and Order: SVU
  • As Told By Ginger
  • The Wild Thornberrys
  • Bob’s Burger
  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
  • Matilda
  • Twilight

Enjoy a Cozy Warm Dinner

Nourishing soups, comforting stews, warm drinks, decadent desserts, yes, please!

What is fall without some rich, cozy dishes? Foods that warm you up from the inside out.

I know time is of the essence, so save time with meal planning, meal prepping, slow cookers, leftovers, and simple recipes.

Your evening routine will never be the same every day. For instance, you may cook a roast chicken and bake an apple pie one day, make a stew in the slow cooker the next day, and eat leftovers on another.

The goal is to care for yourself and enjoy your favorite fall things. An overwhelming routine is not a sustainable one.

Mindfulness Meditation

Another great activity to add to your fall evening routine is meditation.

Meditation has many health benefits, from managing stress and reducing negative thought patterns to lowering blood pressure and improving sleep.

Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment and accepting your thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit and set a timer for 5-10 minutes. Close your eyes and focus on your breath, bringing your attention back to your breath whenever your mind starts to wander. The goal is not to stop your thoughts but to observe them without getting caught up.

You can also listen to guided meditations on YouTube and use apps like Calm or Headspace.

Journaling

A must-have for my fall evening or bedtime routine is journaling.

I sometimes struggle to turn my mind off at bedtime, but journaling has helped me calm my thoughts and get a restful night’s sleep.

Journaling can help you gain perspective, process your emotions, learn more about yourself, and boost creativity.

And journaling doesn’t have to be complicated—spend as much time or as little as you need. The goal is to get your thoughts out of your head and on paper.

You can journal about anything—from gratitude and goals to challenges and random thoughts.

Fall Aromatherapy

What better way to celebrate the season than to use fall scents in your evening routine?

There are many ways to enjoy Autumn aromatherapy, from essential oils and candles to potpourri and room sprays.

Choose from scents like cedarwood, eucalyptus, frankincense, orange, and myrrh.

One of my favorite ways to use fall aromatherapy is simmer pots. It’s a great way to fill your home with fall aromas. Add items like orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves to a saucepan with water and simmer on low heat.

Practice Your Self-Care Routine

Do you have a self-care routine for the fall season?

The change of season can be hard on our physical and mental health, from colder temperatures to darker days.

However, a self-care routine can help nurture your health and improve your overall quality of life.

You can include ideas from this post or any activities that meet your self-care needs.

Does your body feel out of alignment? Maybe some simple stretches or a quick yoga routine can help. Cat pose, anyone?

Remember, your self-care routine is about YOU. It should meet you where you are in life.

Productive Fall Evening Routine Ideas

There’s nothing wrong with creating a fall evening routine with only cozy, relaxing activities.

However, I believe the perfect routine includes activities that will help you stay productive and on top of things. The ones that will keep you organized, help you manage your time effectively, and hold you accountable.

Tidy Up

How do you usually end your evenings? Do you leave the dishes for the next day? How about your living room? Are the throw blankets and pillows out of place?

The last thing you want is to come home after a long day to a messy house.

That’s why tidying up is a great addition to your fall evening routine.

Take some time each evening to clean up your kitchen after dinner, tidy up your living space before heading to bed, and spruce up the bathroom after your skincare routine.

Trust me, as you drift off to sleep, you’ll be at peace knowing you left your place in order.

Set a Bedtime Schedule

One of the most important aspects of a fall evening routine is getting a good night’s rest.

And how do you do that? The solution is to set a bedtime and wake-up time.

The first thing you want to consider when creating your bedtime is to think about how much sleep you need to feel rested.

The recommended sleep time for adults is at least 7 hours, but everyone is different.

Once you know how many hours of sleep you need, it’s time to set your wake-up time.

Consider your work schedule, but also think about other things in your fall morning routine that you would like to do before heading out. For instance, you may want to do a quick workout, read your bible, or journal in the morning, so you would have to get up even earlier.

The goal is to create a schedule and routine that will ensure you get to bed at a reasonable time, get enough sleep, and wake up early enough to complete your morning routine without rushing out the door.

Plan for the Next Day

One of my favorite productive fall evening routine activities is to plan for the next day.

Yes, your evening routine helps you relax in the evening hours, but it can also help your mornings run smoother.

The last thing you want is to spend most of your morning completing mundane tasks.

So, set aside some time in your evenings to plan your next morning and daily tasks.

The first step in planning for your next day is to do things that will make your mornings easier. For example, prepping your breakfast, packing your lunch, picking out your clothes, and collecting your essential items (don’t forget the cozy sweaters).

The next step is to plan your day. Before bed, take some time to finalize your morning routine, review your daily schedule and calendar, and create a to-do list.

Turn off Your Screens

I’m sure you’ve heard about avoiding screens an hour before bed.

It’s for a good reason.

Blue light emitted from electronic devices can throw our circadian rhythm out of balance, affecting our sleep quality.

Exposure to blue light suppresses melatonin production, the hormone that makes us sleepy. That’s actually a good thing… in the daytime. But blue light works against us at night.

So, if we’re watching TV or scrolling on social media moments before bed, our brain is getting signals that we should be awake.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid screens 2-3 hours before bed, or at the very least an hour before.

If you’re a night owl or can’t seem to avoid screens before bed, you can use blue light filters on your devices or wear blue light-blocking glasses.

How to Create the Perfect Fall Evening Routine

The key to a perfect evening routine is to create one that is balanced and satisfies your needs.

A great way to accomplish this is to implement habit pairing, a concept I learned about in the book Atomic Habits.

The theory is if you take a habit you’re already doing and pair it with one you want to build, the new habit becomes more attractive and doable.

In other words, you would pair an activity you want to do with one you need to do.

One way to pair your activities is to find ways to combine them and enjoy them at the same time. So take a productive task and do it along with a relaxing one.

Let me give you a few examples.

  • Prepare a hearty meal while cleaning the kitchen
  • Review your to-do list while sipping on your favorite herbal tea
  • While your dinner simmers, tidy up your space
  • Enjoy a fall-scented candle while you set out your clothes for tomorrow
  • Set the mood with some fall tunes while you pack your lunch

Another great way to pair your activities is to use the current habit to trigger the new one.

Here are some examples:

  • After you finish cooking dinner, enjoy your favorite TV show
  • After you start your essential oil diffuser, reply to emails
  • After your skincare routine, gather all the essentials for the next day
  • After putting the apple pie in the oven, tidy up the kitchen
  • After scrolling on social media for 30 minutes, enjoy a stretch session

There’s no right or wrong way to create your fall evening routine.

Yes, you want to have a good balance between productive activities and relaxing ones. But the ultimate goal is to create a routine that works for you and your lifestyle.

Last Thoughts on Fall Evening Routine

As I stated earlier, those aesthetically pleasing fall YouTube Videos give off the perfect autumn vibes, but they’re not always sustainable or suit our lives.

Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all routine. But YOURS should fit you like a glove.

There’s nothing wrong with getting inspiration from others; however, you should never feel like you have to do something because everyone else is doing it.

The goal is to stay on top of your everyday responsibilities and show yourself lots of love.

And another thing—no routine is permanent. You can tweak and recreate your fall evening routine as you see fit.
