Preparing for the New Year
Let’s talk about how to prepare for the new year!
Ready to say goodbye to the old year and hello to the new? Well… I’ve got you covered.
Whether you’re a goal-setting queen, a New Year’s resolution ninja, or a no-goals Zen master, preparing for the New Year doesn’t have to be an uphill battle.
No more stressing over unfinished goals of yesteryear, never-ending to-do lists, or the big ‘R’… yes, Resolutions. Now, you can walk into the new year prepared, organized, and confident. I’m talking about the readiness that would make even a to-do list connoisseur shiver in their boots.
Alright, maybe I’m being a little too dramatic.
But seriously, with some planning and action steps, you can make the most of the new year without feeling overwhelmed.
In this blog post, you’ll learn helpful tips to help you declutter, set realistic goals, manage your finances, prioritize self-care, and more.
Are you ready to have the best year ever? Let’s go!

7 Ways to Prepare for the New Year
1. Reflect on Last Year
As we approach the end of the year, set aside some time for reflection. Think of it as a one-on-one therapy sesh with yourself, where you look back on what the past twelve months have brought.
Think about the triumphs and challenges of the previous year. Did you land your dream job? Did you deal with financial hardship?
Also, consider the goals you set in the past year. Did you achieve them? Are they worth focusing on in the new year?
Did you experience any surprises, twists, or turns that changed your direction or focus?
What about your new skills and hobbies? Did you finally master that skill or start a new hobby?
You also want to consider how well you cared for yourself and your relationships. What were your favorite self-care practices? How have your relationships grown this past year?
Let’s say you started this incredible morning routine that transformed your life. Or you had a moment of reflection and realized you developed a few bad habits. These are the things to remember and carry forward (or not) into the new year.
Now listen here… this isn’t a time for self-judgment or regret but a moment for introspection and learning. So cut yourself some slack.
It’s about knowing where you’ve been so you know where you need to go. In other words, it’s about identifying what worked well and what didn’t, so you can make informed decisions on how to move forward.
2. Take Care of Last-Minute Tasks
Now that you’re up to speed on the past year, now is a good time to tie up loose ends.
Meet Samantha, a gold-medal procrastinator. Champion of “I’ll get to it tomorrow.” Each day, she’d add tasks to her towering mental “to-do-later” list, promising to tackle them… you guessed it, tomorrow. As the tasks multiplied, so did her stress levels. Poor Samantha rang in the New Year, handling outdated tasks instead of enjoying the present moment.
Don’t be like Samantha! Tackle those last-minute tasks now and save yourself from unnecessary stress and chaos in the New Year.
These are your time-sensitive tasks, like renewing your insurance, or quick tasks, like finally making that dreaded phone call.
You know, it’s the small things, like sorting mail or paying bills, that end up feeling like we’re carrying a baby elephant on our backs because they keep piling up.
Get them done now so you can start the new year with a clean slate.
Create a to-do list and prioritize the time-sensitive tasks you need to complete before the year ends.
Here are some examples of tasks that often get put off until the very last minute:
- Work or business-related administrative tasks
- Phone calls and follow-ups
- Household chores
- Finances (bill payment, budgeting, taxes)
- Medical appointments (use up those insurance benefits)
- Shopping (holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions)
- Vacation planning
- Insurance review and updates
- Package returns and subscription cancellations
- Digital declutter (email inbox, desktop, phone)
- Car maintenance
Just imagine: with those last-minute tasks all squared away, you’ll be starting the new year with a clean slate, ready to focus on your new goals and intentions.
3. Set Goals for the New Year
Dreaming big is like aiming for the stars, moon, or the complete universe. It’s incredible. Exciting. The sky’s the limit. But remember, even astronauts need a practical plan (and a darn good rocket!) to get there.
Don’t get me wrong—there’s nothing wrong with dreaming big and aiming high. In fact, I encourage it! But you want to ensure your dreams are realistic and have actionable steps to turn them into achievable goals.
Maybe you want to learn a new language, get closer to God, find a new job, launch a new business, and, hey, even shed those extra pounds (cue the eye roll).
Now, transform those big dreams into small, attainable goals.
For example, instead of saying, “I want to take a dream vacation to Costa Rica next year,” say, “I plan to save $200 each month to fund my dream vacation to Costa Rica next year.” To make it even more achievable, you can break it down further and say, “I will set up an automatic transfer to my savings account each payday, research affordable travel options, and maybe even take a Spanish class.”
See how breaking down big goals into smaller, achievable steps makes them seem much more attainable?
You can even create a vision board, a fantastic visual tool to keep your goals tangible and in sight. It can also motivate you when you feel overwhelmed or lose sight of your goals.
4. Prioritize Your Self-Care
Oh, let me take you back to my 9-5 days, chained to a desk, dreaming of creative freedom. One fine day, my sister, brother-in-law, and I started our stationery business. Hours melted into late nights filled with designing, creating, and packaging products.
Well, guess what? We burned the candle at both ends and boy, did it burn out quickly. Our little venture dried up faster than an uncapped glue stick.
Maybe (just maybe) if we’d taken breaks and didn’t work ourselves to the bone, we’d still be in business.
So, what did I learn? We often get so consumed by our goals and ambitions that we forget to take care of ourselves along the way. Neglecting our physical and mental health leads to burnout, which can sabotage even the most successful plans (take it from me).
So before you dive into your list of ambitious new year goals, prioritize your health and well-being first.
And a great way to do that? By starting small! Set aside time every day for self-care activities. It could be a journaling session, a skincare routine, or a quick yoga exercise.
(Want to know my secret to getting the TLC I need? I add self-care activities to my morning and evening routines).
The goal is to foster good health and establish healthy habits to support you throughout the year. It’s not about quick fixes but building a lifestyle that promotes long-term well-being.
So, eat well, stay active, be mindful, and get enough rest.
These small moments of self-care can make all the difference in keeping you balanced and healthy. You deserve to thrive, not just survive. So make self-care a non-negotiable part of your New Year preparations.
5. Organize and Clean Your Space
Nothing spells a fresh start like a tidy, organized space.
Did you know that a cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind?
Yes, piles of laundry, stacks of papers, and that one chair that has seen more clothes than cabooses aren’t just eyesores. They’re sneaky little productivity vampires, sucking away your focus and energy.
(Sorry, things got a little dark there!)
But research shows that living and working in a messy environment can increase stress and reduce productivity (that explains so much).
So, as you prepare for the new year, take some time to clean and organize your living space.
Imagine stepping into a room where every item has its own little home. The books are neatly stacked. Cushions perfectly fluffed. And the papers… organized in a way that would make Marie Kondo proud.
It’s a sight that makes you warm and cozy, right?
Where to start, you ask? Here’s a fun little list to help you clean and declutter:
- Closet: Dump, donate, or sell clothes you no longer wear.
- Workspace: Clear off your desk and organize your digital files.
- Kitchen: Throw out expired food and give those cupboards a good wipe-down.
- Living spaces: Tidy up and re-organize bookshelves, media centers, and other areas.
- Personal items: Organize your purse, car, and digital devices.
Bonus Tip: Ever tried the 15-minute cleaning technique? Just set a timer and dedicate those minutes each day to tidying up. Imagine how much you’ll accomplish and how clutter-free your space will be.
6. Financial Planning
Say goodbye to stress, debt, and financial woes as you embrace the new year with a healthy financial flow.
Sure, getting your finances in order might not sound as fun as planning a trip to a tropical island, but trust me, it’s just as essential if not more.
It’s that time of year… New year, new you! Now is the best time to check your finances and set goals for the months ahead. So you can be financially prepared and conquer life’s unexpected hurdles like a champ.
Here are a few things to think about as you get ready for the upcoming year:
- Evaluate your spending habits: Random shopping sprees getting the best of your wallet? Take a moment to track where your money is going.
- Create a budget: Cut back on expenses, increase savings, and create monthly budgets
- Set realistic financial goals: Set realistic financial goals that are achievable with your current income and expenses.
- Review your insurance coverage: Review your policies (health, life, car, home/rental insurance) and make any necessary changes.
- Create an emergency fund: Start the new year on the right foot by creating an emergency fund that can cover at least 3-6 months of living expenses.
- Check your credit score: Many online tools allow you to check your score for free. If there are errors, correct them. If your score is low, explore ways to improve it.
- Review your debts: If you have any loans or credit card balances, brainstorm ways to pay them off.
- Retirement plan: Look at your current retirement savings and make necessary adjustments.
Just a friendly reminder—managing finances isn’t a ‘one-and-done’ affair. It’s an ongoing journey.
But regular check-ins (monthly budgets, tracking spending) will help you keep your finances on track. (Psst! It also makes for an easy-breezy tax season.)
7. Create an Action Plan
And last but not least, drumroll please… It’s time to put on our planning hats and create that action plan that’s going to make this new year the best one yet.
Don’t you just love the thrill of setting big, ambitious goals for the new year? Planner? Check. List of goals? Check. Execution? (Cue the crickets).
Feeling a bit overwhelmed, huh?
Not to worry! That’s where the magic of action plans comes into play.
These are like your own personal roadmap, guiding you through the maze of your goals and helping you stay on the right track. It’s a concrete plan that lays out what needs to be done, when, and how.
Here are my top 5 tips for creating a successful action plan:
- Prioritize your tasks: Decide which tasks are most important and tackle those first.
- Set a timeline: Set specific deadlines for each task to keep yourself accountable.
- Review plan: Regularly review and adjust your action plan to stay on track.
- Celebrate small wins: Indulge in small rewards for every goal you achieve to keep yourself motivated.
- Use a planner: Use a good old-fashioned planner, digital systems, or a printable calendar to keep track of important dates, goals, and tasks.
Setting up an action plan might take a little elbow grease, but the rewards you’ll reap—focus, clarity, and productivity—make it totally worth the effort.
